Documentary photography has always spoken to me because it captures a particular season of life for whomever chooses to accept it. Whether that season be good, bad, or crazy messy (or all of the above, in some cases), it’s a part of your story.

This family was living in a season of normal when everything changed: their son needed a new kidney. Their world flipped upside down (with not only this, but a new baby!)  and their life as they knew it changed completely.

While many may shy away from documenting such an intense time, this family saw the importance of documenting their new lifestyle, filled with monitors, medications, and doctor visits. They wanted to document everything, from the medication routines, to g-tube feedings, to kids playing around and being normal kids: this was their new reality and the transition was important for them to capture.

Outside of their desire to document their real, honest, authentic life, what stuck out to me was how positive, grateful, and hopeful this whole family was. Their journey may have been filled with some challenging times, but they adjusted their sails and have come back stronger than before. When it would be easy to be frustrated, negative, and disheartened, they chose joy and happiness.

I am honored to have been able to document this time in their lives, and to provide images to tell their amazing story.
